Solebury Theater Collective (STC) is designed to cultivate inspiration and collaboration among artists, performers, and technicians in the theater arts. Through the transformative potential of the theatrical experience, STC nurtures an atmosphere of equity and inclusivity for the Solebury School community, including our audiences and those who have yet to find a home in the performing arts.

The Theater Tech program honors Solebury's philosophy of getting students to pursue their passions. The tech crew transforms the Barn Theater, designing and building each set from scratch. Students are trained to run the light and soundboards, construct the sets, and manage the stage to reimagine our intimate performance venue multiple times each year, stretching their creativity to the limits while working with state-of-the-art equipment.

Through consent-based practices, a performance-focused approach with a wide range of material, and access to incredible opportunities in NYC and incredible regional theater in Philadelphia, NJ, and within Bucks County, STC is setting students up to be leaders in the theater and entertainment industry.

Classes and Performances

FALL Trimester

Acting 1 (Theater Fundamentals Arts Block - Arts 2)

Students will learn the fundamentals of acting through various exercises and individual and group scene work. Through various opportunities, students will have opportunities to perform scenes and monologues in front of a live audience. Designed for students of all levels will be a prerequisite for any advanced performance-based class

The Art of the Scare (Community Outreach Block - Arts 1)

A spirited and fun exploration of a curious corner of entertainment - the Immersive Haunted Attraction. Students will develop their own immersive haunted attractions. The course will culminate in a final project, where the class will present their fully realized haunted attraction to the community.

Fall Play: Trap by Stephen Gregg

An incomprehensible event: every person in the audience of a high school play falls unconscious - every person but one. Using interviews with witnesses, loved ones, first responders, and the investigators pursuing the case, a theater ensemble brings the story of the strange event to life, documentary style. Prepare to go on a rollercoaster of suspense where every twist and turn leads to unforeseen revelations, unraveling the intricacies of "Trap" before your very eyes.
Presented: Thursday, 11/2 at 7 pm, Friday 11/3 at 7 pm, Saturday, 11/4 at 2 pm & 7 pm, Sunday, 11/5 at 2 pm - Tickets: $13

WINTER Trimester

Theater for Activism: (Community Outreach Block - Arts 1)

Partnering with a student-chosen organization to raise mental health awareness, we will rehearse and perform the play "Every Brilliant Thing," which tells the story of a person's life through a series of vignettes and audience participation, as they create a list of all the brilliant things in life to combat their mother's depression and suicidal tendencies.
Presented: Wednesday, 2/7, for students and faculty throughout DEI day as well as at 7 pm for the general public - Performances are free, with donations being collected for a charity TBD

Winter Musical: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical that tells the story of Joseph, a young man who is betrayed by his jealous brothers. Despite facing numerous challenges, Joseph's talent and perseverance led him to become a star brighter than anyone could imagine. We look forward to presenting this classic musical with an STC twist.
Presented: Thursday 2/22 at 7pm, Friday 2/23at 7 pm, Saturday 2/24 at 2 pm & 7 pm, Sunday 2/25 at 2 pm - Tickets: $18

SPRING Trimester

Arts Festival Production: The Boy Who Kicked Pigs, adapted by Kill the Beast

STC's Conservatory students bring this darkly twisted tale of mischief and revenge to life! Based on the book by Doctor Who's Tom Baker, this madly hilarious, frenetic scream of a show, which includes shark-mauling beach-goers, burning vicars, and even waltzing rats, is a multi-rolling masterpiece that tells the gloriously grisly tale of one scoundrel's attempt at infamy.
Presented: Friday 4/19 at 7 pm & Saturday 4/20 at 2 pm & 7 pm - Tickets: $13

STC On Tour: A Children's Theater Experience (Community Outreach Block - Arts 1)

Students will work together to rehearse and perform a touring children's theater production that will be performed at local schools. This allows students to gain practical experience as performers while giving back to the community. This year's piece is "The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza" by Don Zoldis - Two battling narrators attempt to cover the entirety of Greek mythology using audience participation, cross-dressing, and general theatrical insanity. Creation myths like Pandora's Box, Cronos, and the Titans jostle for space with other famous myths like Jason and the Argonauts (the original Super Friends). Culminating in a heart-pounding, five-minute, two-actor version of The Iliad, this fast-paced, free-wheeling play is wild, silly, and a complete blast for all ages.
Presented: Wednesday, 5/15 - touring to local schools TBD and Saturday 5/18, at 12 pm (possibly also 2 pm). Tickets: $10

Spring Play - Breaking the Mold: An Evening of LGBTQ+ and Female Playwrights

Celebrate diversity and inclusivity with a powerful showcase of thought-provoking plays written by talented LGBTQ+ and female playwrights and directed by our theater faculty and our STC Conservatory members.. Join us in amplifying voices that deserve to be heard, challenging stereotypes, and embracing the true essence of representation and equality.
Presented: Thursday 5/9 at 7 pm, Friday 5/10 at 7 pm, Saturday 5/11 at 2 pm and 7 pm Tickets: $13

STC: Conservatory
(Theater Fundamentals Block - Arts 2 and Tuesday Evenings 6:30 - 8:30 pm)

STC: Conservatory is an intensive program designed to elevate the skills of its members in acting, vocals, and dance through repertoire curation, culminating in a full-scale production of "The Boy Who Kicked Pigs" and a showcase performance in NYC for industry professionals.

This program is geared towards our advanced students looking to focus on a career in the theater arts. STC: Conservatory gives students an opportunity to work with other dedicated and skilled actors to collaborate on exciting projects and new works while acting as leaders for the rising performers in the program.

STC Performance Tiers

STC: Conservatory

Schedule: Meets during an Arts Block as well as one evening a week
STC Conservatory is an intensive advanced placement program designed to elevate the skills of its members through craft, repertoire curation, and exploring new & exciting works. Each conservatory-style class would be split into skill-building and active rehearsal time, allowing students to directly apply skills learned to the rehearsal process. The year culminates with a full-scale production, competition performances, and a showcase performance in NYC for industry professionals.

Requirements:

Grade of A or higher in Acting I & at least three other theater performance classes
Grade of A or higher in at least one performance-based Music/Dance class
Successful participation in at least three mainstage STC productions
Display advanced skill level during an audition in front of the theater arts faculty
Be in good academic standing

Students who audition and are accepted must participate in the following:

All required evening classes/rehearsals
Fall Play and/or Winter Musical
Spring Play (direct or perform)
STC Showcase & Competition Performances

* Conservatory members will receive honors level credit for this class as well as any STC: In Residence trimester (Art of the Scare, Theater for Activism, STC: On Tour) class they participate in.

STC: In Residence

Schedule: Meets during “Community Outreach” Arts Block

In Residence is an honors-level performance program for students dedicated to studying the dramatic arts. Resident performers will perform in our honors level “Theater for Activism” production (which will be brought to competition) and have leading roles and leadership responsibilities in our Fall immersive theater production and Spring Children’s Theater Tour. Residents will also work on repertoire curation and have the opportunity to audition for a spot in the NYC showcase performance.

Requirements:

Grade of A- or higher in Acting I
Grade of A- or higher in at least two other performance-based Theater/Music/Dance classes
Successful participation in at least two mainstage STC productions
Display advanced skill level during an audition in front of the theater arts faculty
Be in good academic standing

Students who audition and are accepted must participate in the following:

Three “Community Outreach” classes & performances
Scheduled one on one monologue/song coaching
At least one mainstage STC production
Competition Performance

STC nurtures an atmosphere of equity and inclusivity, giving performers of all skill levels various opportunities to rehearse and perform during arts and activity blocks. All mainstage productions are open for any student of any skill level to audition for - while casting is not guaranteed, we will do everything we can to accommodate any student who wants to expand their theatrical creativity. Performance-based classes (except STC: Conservatory, Residency & Theater for Activism) are open to all students.

The Barn Theater

Solebury School's Barn Theater has undergone a transformation during the last decade, with all new seating, an improved sound system, a new tech booth installed to support our Solebury Theater Collective's increasingly ambitious productions, and a new, state-of-the-art lighting system used by professional theaters, as well as college theaters. The most recent additions are all-new theatrical masking curtains and a 'universal dressing room,' allowing all of our performers to feel welcome, safe, and included during our productions.

STC looks to produce a diverse collection of productions from Broadway favorites like "Chicago" to fringe festival darlings like "The Terrible Infants" to classic works approached through a modern lens like "Spring Awakening." Solebury Theater Collective believes in curating pieces to help bring our performers, technicians, and audiences to a place they did not realize they needed to go.
